House rules

Big White Wall is a peer support network that encourages you to be open about what is on your mind, to learn more about yourself and to work through what is troubling you. All members are asked to keep to these house rules.

You are asked to take responsibility for yourself on Big White Wall and to make sure that you Keep safe. You are requested not to share information that will identify you personally or seek to discover or reveal the identity of another member. In this respect we also ask that you do not upload identifiable photographs of yourself or others onto bricks or avatars.

You are encouraged to ask for support, to make decisions for yourself and to let other members know what you find more or less helpful in their responses.

You are encouraged to express fully and honestly whatever is on your mind and to take responsibility for what you choose to share. You are asked to be mindful that many members are emotionally vulnerable and you are asked not to contribute content that may provoke others to harm themselves or others.

You are encouraged to think of Big White Wall as a support for, and not as a replacement of, your life offline.

You are asked to be supportive to other members and to treat them with respect and sincerity. This means you listen to other members, share helpful experiences and insights, ask them open questions, support them and offer constructive feedback. You are asked not to provide advice as we each have to make up our own minds what is best for us.

You are asked to alert a Wall Guide to any member that appears to be at immediate risk of harming themselves or another.

You are encouraged to highlight any threats you perceive to yourself or others on Big White Wall and to report inappropriate behaviour through the ‘Report’ or ‘Ask Guide’ buttons. Wall Guides respond rapidly and appropriately.

You are encouraged to respect the commitments and promises you make to others.

You are invited to Get in touch with the team at Big White Wall with your concerns, interests and feedback.

Big White Wall appreciates the role that you can play in bringing posts, comments or bricks that you find offensive, or in breach of our Terms of use, to our attention. We carefully consider ALL reported content. Inappropriate content may result in a warning or – in extreme circumstances – the banning of a member from the site. Please read our Terms of use (of which these House rules form a part) fully to find out what is expected of you as a Big White Wall member.

Big White Wall does not tolerate pornography, abusive behaviour or sexually explicit content under any circumstances. If your intention is simply to shock or upset, don’t bother – people will complain and we’ll just remove the offensive material.
Bullying, intimidation or harassment is not acceptable anywhere - least of all on Big White Wall. While open discussion and healthy debate are all high on the agenda, please do not cross the line and get nasty. A couple of tips: DON’T USE CAPITAL LETTERS TO MAKE A STRONGER POINT – IT’S LIKE SHOUTING ISN’T IT? NO ONE ON BIG WHITE WALL WANTS OR DESERVES TO BE SHOUTED AT. If you think someone deserves a good ticking off, flag it up to us by clicking the "Report" button next to the brick, comment or Talkabout post and we’ll deal with it. Remember, the written word can seem far more aggressive or confrontational than intended when the person you are "talking" to cannot see or read your facial expressions.
Do not use Big White Wall with the intention of distributing illegal material of any kind. This includes images, text or graphics. Also, joining or starting discussions about the intention to commit illegal acts is not allowed.
Some of the conversations on Big White Wall are inappropriate for younger web users. For this reason, in order to join Big White Wall, you must be 16 or over.
Do not impersonate other people on Big White Wall, either real or fictitious. Tempting as it may be in an anonymous environment to "be" someone else, it’s actually against the law. Nor can you impersonate Big White Wall Wall Guides or other staff members. Wall Guides and other team members are carefully selected and trained to do the job they do, impersonating them is not only confusing and disorientating for everyone else, but could also result in loss of membership. Just be yourself!
If you are a journalist looking for a story, we ask you not to approach members on the site directly. The reason for this is that Big White Wall values members’ right to peace and privacy to get on with whatever they want to on the site without being distracted or inappropriately questioned. Instead, contact our head of press and publicity sharon@bigwhitewall.com to help you out.
Do not infringe another person’s copyright or other intellectual property rights. This means you can only upload material that you have got the right to use. In other words, don’t upload stuff you didn’t make yourself. For more information on copyright, see our Terms of use
Lively debate and discussion are encouraged, but Big White Wall has a zero tolerance policy on hate speech or malicious stereotyping. This includes sexism, racism or slurs against an individual’s sexual orientation, religion or nationality.
Don’t use Big White Wall for anything other than that for which it was intended. Don’t create dummy accounts with the intention of spamming or antisocial behaviour, we’ll only remove them and ban you from the site.
Please do not use bricks, Talkabouts or any other areas of Big White Wall to promote or advertise products and services. Again, we will just remove it.

When you join Big White Wall as a member, you agree to our Terms of use and you agree to these House rules as part of these Terms of use. Your acceptance helps us to make sure that Big White Wall runs smoothly and safely for everyone. Violation will result in a warning or, in extreme cases, a loss of membership. Once you have been banned, you cannot come back, so enjoy Big White Wall to the full, and keep to these house rules.
