My secret spending habit

I saw an article in The Times today - Big White Wall talking about debt and it made me think - take a look at my brick

I have made a big mistake this month. I have spent far too much money on things just because it is half price. And most of the things aren't for me, they are for the house.

I haven't told my husband yet. He will find out soon enough when the credit card bill comes through.

Try and sort as soon as you can - and share it with your husband.  I have spent years avoiding the truth about money and it soon it became a compulsive habit and I saw it happen with one of my kids and she suffered badly.  What is it about spending what we havent got - its has to be the instant good feel factor and such a destroyer of confidence

The easy availability of credit makes it appear that we are not spending real money. However, you have taken an important first step by admitting you have spent more than you have. Perhaps if you look at exactly how this has left your finances and come up with a plan for getting back into financial shape it will give you more confidence to talk to your husband. Like you have got yourself into trouble but you have a way of getting out of it too.

I am soooo like this about holidays. Rather than budgetting for a proper holiday I'll say 'no, I can't afford it' then the option of a city break comes up and I use the card for the flights, then it's weeks til the trip so what I spend on the hotel doesn't count, and then spending money doesn't count, and there's what I buy in the airport. All of a sudden, what seems like a great £60 flight to Barcelona, ends up being a £500 trip that I hadn't budgetted for but I act like I DESERVE it, it's not real money. And I still haven't had a proper holiday.

Hi ablely, did you talk to your husband today? Maybe you could use the article as a way to start the conversation? Money causes horrendous relationship problems, don't let it take a hold.

S'pose the two routes are a) get a plan first and b) work out how to tell the hubby and then walk through the plan together.  I'm divorced, and I'd love to have option b) ... it's worth trying to go that way if you can.

If you're not in big debt yet then read The three most important lessons you've never been taught by Martin Lewis (play.com £3.49) for giving you ideas about how to save and manage money. Also, try the forums at www.moneysavingexpert.com for more e-encouragement and ideas from others with money problems.

If your problems are bigger and more urgent than that, I do suggest getting someone who can help you to sort things out and take the load off you.  Go along to your local Citizens Advice Centre, or one of the free debt advice helplines - for example, CCCS.  Don't go anywhere near a debt consolidator (putting all your debts into one loan) without expert advice, and don't go to anyone who charges you a fee for their service.
