How do you motivate yourself?

    I am feeling rather slothlike at the moment having not done any exercise for a little while.  Trouble is, I need a kick up the bottom to actually go out running.  Does anyone have any tips for motivating yourself?  I would love to hear them.

    I'm not sure if it counts as motivation, but I hang my exercise clothes (shoes, socks, underthings, even the scarf I wear over my hair) over the back of my chair every night so they are the first things I see in the morning.

     

    I get up, exercise, take a shower and then start my day.

     

    If I do it any other way I find I don't exercise at all. In the beginning I went to bed in my exercise clothes so all I had to do in the morning was roll out of bed, put on my shoes, put on a scarf or hat and go.

     

    I force myself to exercise, I don't enjoy it at all, but I view it the same as taking all my vitamins and meds in the morning. Sometimes I stare at the pile of pills in my hand and just thinking about swallowing them all exhausts me, but I do it anyway.

    Hey Thorn, I think that is a very good idea. 

    Something I do is have a playlist of very good music ready to go to keep me going. I find that music gets me through even the most unpleasant exercise experiences!!!

    Hey Muse - I tend to go through phases of being really fit (summer) to roughing it off and not lifting a finger (winter). For me, the absolute hardest part after a period of sloth is actually doing that very first run - once you get that out of the way somehow I just get back into the routine, I just need to break that cycle!

    Just go for it!

    I struggle with doing exercise too. I still havent found a way to get myself motivated yet either. Although I have found that if I dont like doing it, then Im not going to be doing it. So I try to find things (exercise) that I like doing and enjoy. For me that is bike riding and skipping. I also enjoy walking through the bush rather than along a footpath. All these things motivate me to want to exercise...but sometimes its just that first step that is the hardest. I have days/weeks/months where I cant be bothered and get too distracted doing other things. It's really easy to procrastinate and put it off. Keep trying and finding things you like doing.
