Betrayal has to be one of the worst things that can be done to you. Who has betrayed you? Have you been able to take any steps to heal the rift?

My spouse betrayed my trust 15 years ago - not with an affair but with finances. She hid our financial issues from me, I assume for all the “right” reasons, but it ended us in bankruptcy court and financially destroyed us – even to this day. It has been 15 years, but I still do not fully trust her – with finances or anything else. If she lied about something so damaging to our family – my gut tells me she would lie about other things as well. Truth has always been a big issue with me and for someone so close to me to betray that trust, I just can’t seem to get past it.

That must be a very hard thing to deal with and you have my respect for not letting it completely destroy your marriage.

However, it sounds like it is still a heavy presence in your relationship. Do you know that your wife continues to lie to you? Or is it something that you just suspect.

How can you ever be sure that someone you love (loved?) is lying? Is it a lie or just a misunderstanding? Without trust, every thing is a potential lie. I should be able to put it past me, but I just can't.

Have you been open with your wife about how you feel? Perhaps with a counselor? Would you consider marriage counseling?

This must be such a massive contributor to the general malaise that you spoken about on other bricks. Maybe resolving it may unblock other areas of your life?

Openness is not my problem. Maybe being too open is!
My wife and I stay together because we still have children at home and we were not raised to be the divorcing kind. Like I wrote – once the trust has been violated everything is a possible lie. It eats at my soul to be so untrusting but I know it is just a matter of time before I am betrayed again. – Sure it is MY problem but it seems to be one that is impossible to solve.
Some days all I want to do is put an end to it all and let the world go on. I am positive my absence would not make a difference – but then I think of how that would affect my daughters and I press on. Some day, some day….
