Your brick story

I am too scared to seek professional help for my problems. I got help once (against my will) when I was much younger, and although in hindsight it was probably doing me good, I quit going because I was worried about how it would affect my future in terms of employability etc. I often wish I could go back, but I'm no longer a minor, and am therefore unable to use the 'child and adolescent' mental health services and would have to use the adult ones. This scares me more than the thought of what I might end up doing to myself without treatment...

Hi Anon, it's awful when our own medical systems let us down. Have you talked to anyone else about whether working with someone would have an impact on employability? Are the consultations not confidential?

In the meantime if you want to offload, maybe you can use the Wall to talk about things that are on you mind - if you reply here you will be anon. There are good people here who will listen.

    Thinking of you UM x

if you're in the US, it wont affect employability since there are so many confidentiality laws in effect here. also if you're in the US, depending on what part you're in, MHMR (mental health and mental retardation) might be an option. if you're in college, i would consider using the facilities on campus, they're usually pretty trained and know how to help you find other centers.

i've been in the adult mental health services for the last couple of years. sometimes i really wish i had been able to get help when i was younger.

look up everything you can online. it helps when you know a little about what you're getting into before you go in for an appointment.

Since you are in the UK it's hard to know what the system is like there. Here in the US there are strict condidentiality laws & employers would not have to know if you had mental health issues. Also are you talking about inpatient or outpatient? I know in psychiatric units, even if a person checks themselves in they have to wait a certain amount of time to get out. I worked as an intern in one & I was so disappointed how they treated the patients --- like they were little children who could not think for themselves.
If you find outpatient help you can "shop" around to find someone you feel comfortable with, and attend groups/therapy where and when you want to. YOU should be allowed to be in charge of your own treatment, although it's always good to get professionals' opinions & diagnosis.
