  This is very sweet. What if they used to make allowances, and stopped? Are they still a friend, or is it time to let them go?

  Friends come in all shapes and sizes, and those shapes and sizes change over time.

  As I have aged and learned about me and changed a great deal, so have my friends changed. I still have a friend that I made when I went to school with her back in 1963. I still love her, but she is not my best friend any more, and will never be - we share so much history, but our lives have diverged, we have developed in entirely different ways. She is who she is, and I accept that. As she does for me.

  Other friends have changed with me - grown with me - or have accepted the changes in me with vaying degrees - some have left my life altogether, and are no longer my friends.

  I used to regret this, but am now more philosophical - all things change. The tide goes in, and goes out, and flotsam and jetsam washes up on the sand. What we do with it is different for all of us. And the people we love change according to their own lives, also.

  Sometimes our own needs are too much for them. They cannot deal with it - they may have so much of their own 'stuff' to deal with that ours is just beyond them. Sometimes, they simply don't want to know. And that is okay, too, they are people with the right to choose.

  We all change and grow, and sometimes our friends bitterley disappoint us - as we disappoint them. Sad for the time, but life as it flows on, our own rich and ever-changing tapestry.

  Sometimes friends go, and later they come back - having been through different things, had different learning experiences, become able to accept things, whatever.

  Friendship is not a fixed point, I don't feel. It is a flowing thing, and changes as we do. And friends change, also.

  I don't know if that helps - as usual, I have gone into my writing-a-book-mode - sorry!

  oh so wonderful, such truth , even though for me the concept of friendship has always bemused me or perhaps scared me ..
