Your brick story

Last weekend I spent the day with a friend that I had not seen for 20 years. A very special friend from my teens. Why hadn't I seen her? Same reason I have lost touch with most of my friends, by the time I had met the needs of my family and work there was no time left.

It was a terrific day and after she left I spent the evening with tears streaming down my face for lost time.

Yesterday my husband and I spent the day with other shared friends from way back. I had dreaded the day but it was wonderful.

I am just realising exactly how much I gave up for my job and how very grateful I am that those friends are generous enough to still be there when I got round to realising how much I love them.

However great a job is, it doesn't love you back.

I am so glad for you, MeerCat, that you have found your friends still there for you - what a beautiful thing.

You are so right about the job - it is love, and people, who are important, who make our lives -

    Celebrating your re-found friendships -

No a job does not come close to equalling friendship. But was it a refuge as well as a job?

It is brave of you to revisit these friendships ant :)

I don't think my job was a refuge but it was all absorbing and rewarding and I allowed myself to think it was the most important thing, sometimes even taking priority over my family although not in major ways. Ant I can't even claim to be brave, my friends sought me out and although I was nervous about seeing them again because I thought they would blame me for ignoring them for so long, they turned out to be even more generous than I remembered.
When I retired I promised myself that I would not put anything before the people that matter to me ever again and I am already so glad to be doing that. The wall is also teaching me a lot about people and what really matters so thank you all for that.

Meer Cat, You are brave because in spite of how nervous you were you still made yourself present for them - you didn't run or hide. That is brave. :) ant:)
