Hope is Hard

That's one of the key lines of the trainees at work. One of my jobs is to teach a framework of Anger Hope Action to achieve change - it's a common enough framework. We all can relate to and agitate to create anger and we can all get involved in actions - but the bridge is hope. Anger with out hope is dangerous - it can't go anywhere but just remain and fester. Action without vision is just mindless. Hope brings with it so much - with hope we can have a new vision, a way of seeing the possibilities in all things, a means of bringing others along by sharing or lending hope.

But not knowing how long we must hope for is hard too. Hope without a clear end point is really hard- it moves so easily into hopelessness - it fades. Small signs restore hope - they can come unexpectedly - just when we are about to give up hope - just when we have declared that hope is hard. Hardest because hope often comes from within and without a diary entry or reminder.

Hope is a hard one. I had no idea of it's definition until about 3 years ago. I remember sitting in therapy, understanding that I felt a bit better, realizing that I just might have something to look forward to, that I might have something to live for ... I kept going down the list of my emotions and feelings and she blurted out: THAT'S HAVING HOPE. You're right though, it's absolutely hard ... one of the hardest of emotions - at least for me.

The mad ,angry dictator who hopes that he/she can rule on without opposition . It depends how you define hope and in what context . Who is hoping and for what I think . Cheers Cate xx

Hey Cate - I guess that is hope but not within the framework to achieve change. That's just a way of saying I want to retain my power. A different paradigm. XXXXX UM

Ok, what if you couple anger and hope in this scenario. The anger a young person feels for life is coupled with the hope to end it soon. And suicides. The choice to die fuelled by anger + hope has brought about the desired change I guess I don't see hope as exclusively positive emotion. In your paradigm I would suggest ' insight 'could be more useful than 'hope'.

But Cate, I don't think anyone would see that as a social change for good. It is a framework from my work not for counseling individuals - an I think that the individual in your scenario is not engaging in hope but leaping from anger to action - but individuals can relate to wanting to be a leader of their own plan for change and even at an individual level hope is really hard. Sorry to hear you have the bug - get well soon eh? UM xxx

I just keep looking at that droplet and the twig and the place it may fall. I feel the ability to hang on to hope relates to how much uncertainty we can live with at any one time. Also hope can tend to be fixed on a certain outcome although sometimes it is just the ending of uncertainty that is helpful. WHatever, i love this brick and the sentiment behind it and the company here. Love roze
