Your brick story

They can do such harm. More than anyone I've known, I wish my step-mother had understood that. She never saw the damage she was doing. Nor did my father who only one time asked if she thought I had had enough, and left the room as she continued to hurl her hurtful words at me, making sure they got well under my skin.

You are so right Mebenji and there are those who are so careless and so hurtful and they really don't seem to realise the hurt that they cause...

I wondered if my step-mother did know what she was doing and either didn't care or loathed me so much she honestly thought her way of treating me was appropriate. She seemed to choose her amo, site, aim and fire, as if I wore a target.

My father had his head firmly buried in the sand. He just never seemed to see or hear.

Some people are not conscious that words can be so damaging. You know the old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me"? What bullshit. Even how someone can say your own name and make it sound like a putrid priece of rotting meat, is hurtful. Teasing and name-calling which has no tact or kindness involved, hurts.

I mean, for some, a little loving banter and teasing, even sweet name-calling becomes part of the intimacy they share ... I am not refering to that, I think I should also add.

Thanks Muse, for your response. Would you mind explaining to me what the blue squiggle of your avatar actually is?

You are so right about the 'names will never hurt me' - they do and they can be so very hurtful.

My blue squiggle? That's not a squiggle, it's a flame! Somewhere inside, I still have one burning!

Ah, good; a hot blue flame. Thanks Muse, I will remember that. It gives you strength? And courage? I hope so.
The way my eyesight is, I couldn't see it - that's why I asked.
May your flame burn long and bright.

I wonder Mebenji, if we could change all of the stupid sayings that are aimed at making each of us feel small and inadequate would we be better behaved towards each other. I sometimes feel we are just the most rotten of animals. Great brick though - Words have the capacity to hurt for generations long after physical wounds have healed.

Words are tools, and we all know that. They are the tools of our communication. Sadly, I think that stepmother knew what she was doing, and used words as her tools. You are a wordsmith also, Mebenji. You defeat her by using your words to support and encourage, and to lend strength. Kudos to you, eh.

Thank you again, Crow. Rather like music, I don't know where I would be without words, Or well, truthfully I do - just don't want to always admit it.
