Your brick story

This is for my mum, I love her very much and recovering from her sudden yet expected death is taking longer than I ever thought it would. She drank herself to death and I kept her out of my son's life and at arms length from mine. In doing so I have protected my son and alienated my whole family. I don't know what is right or wrong I just hope I find out sooner than when on my death bed.

Dear kimmington, we have met before - hello and welcome. I am sorry that your mum has passed on. It's hard losing a parent - especially a mum - that thing of losing the one person who has known you for your whole life. And yes the grief remains for so long. It sounds like you really loved her but could see it may be hard to be too close. What we do to keep ourselves and our kids safe is always really complicated. It doesn't help that it is judged by others who aren't living inside our own lives. Some things just aren't black and white and wrong or right. If you know in your heart you did the best for yourself and your son at that time then that can't be wrong.

thankyou, I don't know what to say other than thankyou. You are the first person to really capture how I feel. No-one else has understood.

Hello K, I too lost a parent, in my case my father, unexpectedly to alcohol and I think that in my heart of hearts, althought it was a few years back now, I am still cross with him. Drinking is in my view a form of self-harm. I wish they had been able to talk about things openly, but that just wasn't/isn't done in my family.

I don't know how this helps your situation, perhaps I am just echoing what UM has said - there are never any right or wrong feelings or actions and you have to do what you think is right - the worst thing you can do is not talk about it.
