Big White Wall is a safe, therapeutic, supportive and creative outlet for releasing and resolving unexpressed emotional issues that may otherwise have a negative impact on individuals’ lives and those around them. It provides a space in which people can exercise choice and responsibility to self-manage their emotional issues and improve wellbeing.
BWW is for anyone over 16 who are experiencing psychological distress, or those close to them.
The spirit of community underpins everything BWW does. BWW provides a safe, welcoming supportive community that is equitable and cares about social justice. The currency is trust, with individuals assured of confidentiality and respect. BWW takes a grounded approach, aiming to increase understanding and self awareness, while offering practical tools and advice. Editorial integrity is key. But as well as being independent, credible and informative, BWW is also vital and creative, allowing individuals the freedom and confidence to explore and find their own solutions. User input lies at the heart of BWW. Building on the social network model, users are encouraged to actively participate to the development of the site, both in generating content and providing feedback.
Community spirit, grounded in reality, the freedom, knowledge and confidence to explore, and, ultimately, the user in control. These are our values, and they are underpinned by our editorial behaviours.
Style and Tone
Our message is welcoming, friendly, open and accessible. It is also genuine, honest, informed and uncomplicated. All site content is respectful and responsive to BWW members and the wider community.
Information written by journalists and professionals (articles, self help and exercises, etc) will strive to be accurate, balanced and transparent. Content will be well researched and from credible sources. It will be presented in clear, precise language, avoid making false claims, be honest and open about unknown or disputed areas and encourage feedback and debate on all the themes and issues covered in delivering useful content for our users.
Independence and Integrity
www.bigwhitewall.com is run by Big White Wall Ltd. The site carries no third party advertising. Its content is not guided by political or commercial pressures, nor by any personal interests, but by the needs of its users. No staff member, freelance journalist or professional writer will be asked, or permitted, to provide favoured treatment of any partner organisation, and all staff or freelancers must fully disclose any financial or other interests they may have in any healthcare-related companies, products or organisations.
We place diversity at the heart of everything we do, welcoming everyone, whatever their gender, age, background, ethnicity, sexuality or disability. We ensure that our visual, audio and written content reflects the diversity of our users. We avoid unhelpful generalisations and negative stereotyping, are open-minded and use inclusive, friendly and welcoming language.
Our aim is to make the site accessible to all. Good accessibility benefits all users, not just specific groups. We will achieve this through well organised, clear and simple presentation and content, in a variety of formats (including written, audio and audio-visual). We will work towards the intelligent application of accessibility guidelines and accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act.
We will never be prescriptive or didactic. Rather we offer information, advice, tools and support, giving users the freedom, understanding and confidence to self manage their own emotional wellbeing.
Users are encouraged as much as possible to use the site to express themselves, send in their comments, stories, support and suggestions and, through feedback, enable us to respond to their needs.
Our site is designed to give high user-utility and engagement. This is achieved through structure and functionality (eg social networking, push and share, and linking to other areas of the site). It is also realised through its content, much of which is interactive (eg discussion groups, talkabouts, guided self assessment and self help tools).
Creative self expression
Creative self expression is central to the site, as a way for users to manage their emotional wellbeing. Users of BWW are invited to design and post a brick, expressing what they want to say, as a form of creative therapy. The site also encourages creative expression in its information and self help exercises, as well as through user generated creative networks, discussion groups and other user generated content.
User Generated Content
User generated content is the lifeblood of the site. We encourage, support and, where the user permits it, share user generated content. Such content will tend to focus on people’s personal views and experience, providing a therapeutic outlet for self expression. At the same time it will adhere to BWW community values of anonymity, honesty, sincerity, openness and respect.
Views and Opinion
We aim to publish the broadest spectrum of views that are focused and constructive to our users, while adhering to the BWW values listed above.
Safe and Anonymous
Users trust our site because they know that it is safe and anonymous. We will never divulge people’s names or personal details without their express permission and users writing for the site have the right to remain anonymous.
Offensive or Harmful Content
The site provides a safe and open space in which people can discuss sensitive issues. However, we will not include material that could reasonably be deemed as offensive or harmful to others.
We are accountable to our users and will deal fairly and openly with them through clear and effective communication. We will be open in admitting mistakes, encouraging a culture of learning via user feedback. Our editorial processes will be transparent.
